Lesson 10:Scales used in neonatal assessment

Developmental interactive tradition

It is influenced by ecology principles. Major contributors of this tradition are Bowlby , Ainsworth and Bronfenbrenner. Scales developed under this tradition include

  1. Home Observation for measurement of the environment for infants and toddlers (HOME) :
    • It is developed by Caldwell & Bradley.
    • It assesses the quality of child care and quantify the support available to the child at home.
    • It has 45 items clustered into 6 subscales like care giver emotional and verbal responsivity, avoidance of restriction and punishment, organization of environment, provision of appropriate play material, care giver involvement with child and stimulation.
    • Methods used for collecting information include observation and interview.
    • It identifies risk of developmental delay and is used in planning suitable interventions and for research.
  2. Revised Infant temperament Questionnaire (RITQ) :
    • It provides a view of child’s contribution to parent child interaction.
    • It identifies infants who are difficult to support or increase parental understanding
    • Reduce parental stress by encouraging a more flexible response to infant’s behavior style.
  3. Nursing Child Assessment of Feeding Scale :
    • It is a 76 items check list.
    • It assesses parent and infant behavior and communication during feeding.
    • It focuses on parent’s response, positive communication, sensitivity to the developmental level and needs of the child and the reciprocal nature of the dyadic relationship.
