Lesson 9 :Identifying Characteristics of Readiness for Marriage

Identifying Characteristics of an Individual Immature for Marriage

Some of the behaviours which mean that an individual is not ready or immature for marriage is as follows:

  • Is usually ungrateful as a small child. Hardly knows what it is to say, "Thank you, Please, Sorry." Often these words are absent because the feeling is absent.
  • Is inclined to be erratic and moody
  • Is likely to impose his ideas on others.
  • Is jealous and easily hurt.
  • Is rigid and cannot admit his mistakes and try to change. Always considers himself to be 'right" and others wrong.
  • Cannot put himself in another's place and understand how another person feels.
  • Is generally self-centered. His own wants and needs are more important to him than the wishes or needs of anyone else. In his relationships with others, he does not adjust but expects other to adjust to him and his ways.
  • Does not face his problems constructively. Rather, he blames others for whatever happens to him and he uses escapes such as temper spells, sulking, reckless driving or drinking, when things upset him.
  • Makes snap judgments and impulsive decisions without taking time to think a matter through or get all the facts needed for making a wise decision.

It doesn’t take much insight to see that when one or both of the marriage partners behave with such immaturity, problems in the marriage are inevitable. The problems that are inevitably brought on by such immaturity will eventually come, no matter how handsome, beautiful, or sexy the man and or woman may be.
