EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND DEVELOPMENT 3(2+1)
Lesson 03: Language development during ECH period

2 to 3 years: Learning Grammar: Beyond 2 words sentences

  • Between 2 and 3 years of age, many children form sentences of three words or more to convey meaning. For instance, they may say “I hugged the cat”, “I kissed the baby”, “I like dogs” etc.
  • A 3 year old child can use negatives such as no, not, can’t and don’t. They can ask questions using what and where, but are unable to form questions using why or how. During early childhood period children attain mastery over many rules of grammar such as indicating past tense, forming plurals by adding ‘s’ in the end of the singular words, etc.
