Lesson 05: Cognitive Development during Early Childhood Period

Concrete Operational Stage

  1. Concrete Operational Stage: In this stage the child becomes
    • Capable of logical thinking with concrete experiences.
    • Is able to do mental operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and serial ordering.
    • Develops the capacity for reversible thinking and conversion.
    • Is able to classify the understanding of relationships between classes or groups and deductive thinking.
    • However, his capacity for abstract thinking is still limited.
  2. Formal Operational Stage: in this stage the child becomes capable of abstract thinking and deductive reasoning.

Hence, these developmental characteristics at different stages must be considered for Curriculum Planning at different levels.
