Kohlberg views on Gender development

  • Children's understanding of gender become apparent as part of their general cognitive development.
  • Children's understanding of gender provides the key to the development of gender-stereotypic behavior.
  • As children learn about their gender, they are motivated to behave in ways that are consistent with their gender group.
  • Once children develop the idea that gender is a stable attribute, they will show stronger stereotypic behavior, pay more attention to same-sex models, and have better memory for stereotypic information.
