Institutions such as orphanages provide round-the-clock substitute care for children whose parents are completely unavailable for a number of possible reasons. Today, foster care is being more widely used, with very limited usage of orphanages. This change has occurred in part because studies showed tendencies toward serious retardation in many children brought up in institutions.
