Lesson 8 : The Managerial Processes

Basic Managerial Processes

All managers utilize five basic processes regardless of what enterprise they manage: they are Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Leading, Monitoring and controlling for quality.

Let’s look briefly at these five basic managerial processes and relate each to characteristics of the manager of a child development center. Managers are evaluated both formally and informally on their ability to perform these processes. These five basic managerial processes are topics for chapters later in the book.

When the manager is evaluated informally by parents or staff, they may refer to personality characteristics and the way the manager interacts with them. However, as important as interpersonal communication is, managers must successfully carry out many other tasks. When the sponsoring agency or industry evaluates the overall success of the child development center, the manager’s handling of all managerial processes will be on the line.
