Practical-33: Planning stimulation activities for infants (13-18 months)

Introduction: Children of different ages have different needs. These needs are based on each child’s stage of growth and development. Try to understand the unique aspects of each child and plan the activities that are developmentally appropriate for each child. At this period of age, baby starts to show her high curiosity to objects around her. So, don’t wonder if your baby likes to throw everything that is around her simply to know what the reaction is from the environment around.

Aim: To widen horizon of student’s knowledge on planning stimulation activities for children in the age range of 13-18 months.

Objectives:

  1. Developing the skill in planning stimulation activities for infants (13-18 months).
  2. To plan the material for stimulation activities for children (13-18 months).

Characteristics of infants (13-18 months)
By the age of 13-18 months, the infant can

  • Opens books, place 1-3 pegs into peg board
  • Maintains balance in standing position for 1-5 seconds.
  • Begins to walk unsupported 1-5 steps.
  • Takes steps with arms held up near shoulders and has difficulty stopping/starting without falling.
  • Begins to lower self to floor from standing position safely and with control.
  • With supervision, creeps up 1-2 steps on hands and knees.
  • Walks up 1-4 steps with support of rail or hand
  • Uses simple puzzles or form boards
  • Places an object into a bottle and dump it out
  • Scribbles spontaneously
  • Identifies one body part.
  • Makes detours to retrieve objects.
  • Matches objects.
  • Understand simple instructions ex. Brings objects from another room on request.
  • Babbles intricate inflection
  • Uses single-word sentences
  • Gestures spontaneously to indicate needs
  • Says "no" meaningfully
  • Names one or two familiar objects and desired items
  • Gives toy to familiar adult spontaneously and upon request
  • Plays ball cooperatively
  • Holds and drinks from cup with some spilling
