Origin

Origin

Rice is regarded as a first cultivated crop of Asia. Preserved rice grains were found in China around 3,000 B.C. Paddy grains were found in excavation atHastinapur in India around 1000-750 B.C. considered as oldest sample in the world.

Decondolle (1886) mentioned south India as its centre of origin. Vavilov (1926)concluded that South-west Himalaya has various types and varieties and indicated probable centre of origin. Thus based on all these archaeological evidences India is considered as centre of origin of rice.
