Terminology for Antimicrobial Agents

  • Disinfectants: Clinical term/ Environment surfaces/ Water Chlorination
  • Sanitizers: Food industry/ Environment surfaces
  • Antiseptics: on skin or mucous membrane not suitable for internal use
  • Chemotherapeutic agents (Antibiotics): For internal use in plants, humans and animals
  • Preservatives: added to food or produced by fermentation.
  • Suffix: -cidal or cide = kill
  • -static or stat= inhibit without killing
  • Germicide: Kill microorganisms
  • Sporicide: Kill spores
  • Fungicide: Kill fungi
  • Viricide: Kill virus
  • Fungistat: inhibit fungi
  • Bactericide: Kill bacteria
  • Bacteristat: inhibit bacteria
