The effects of deficiency are

• Decreased rate of growth
• Negative calcium balance
• Loss of calcium from bone leading to the development of osteoporosis
• Hyperplasia (a diffuse overgrowth) of parathyroid glands
• Hyperirritability and tetany leading to death.
