Demerits of formal communication

Demerits of formal communication

  • Delay: The formal communication takes more time to pass information. Since rules are to be followed channels are not spontaneous and flexible. For example if a sudden holiday has been declared, all employees have to wait for the written circular.

  • Internal means only: In formal communication the members of the organization interact and communicate with each other only. Superior directs the subordinates. The information does not go outside the organizations.

  • Information overloaded: In a complex business organization there are always many series of messages and information to be handled. It ultimately leads to a work load on the employees.

  • Absence of outside interface: The people in the organization interact within their own group. They do not interact with the outsiders due to which there is slow transmission of communication, there are no quick responses nor is there any feedback. No public relations of the organization with society is very important but this does not happen when there is formal communication.
