Lesson 1 : Extension Programme

Introduction

The planning and development of an extension programme is a continuous and inter-related series of processes. The purpose of extension is to facilitate learning and action among the members of farm families and communities, extension educators and administrators, personnel of other service agencies and groups in order to promote agricultural production and improvements in the general quality of rural life.

To solve the most urgent problems of the people it is necessary to analyse the facts of the situation under study and prepare effective plans for development (Fig. 1.1). One such kind of plan used in modern extension work is the “extension programme”.
To understand the extension programme planning process-its objectives, principles and concepts, it is necessary first of all to get acquainted with certain basic concepts of an extension programme.
