Lesson 2:Types of Training

Principles of Training

  1. Addressing job performance or needs- Irrespective of type of training, every training should enhance or change existing performance towards betterment. This satisfies the trainee as well as the organization which sends him /her for training.
  2. Setting of appropriate objectives according to needs- Objectives are set to meet. They are set based on facts which are expressed as needs. These are to be found from the situation of the trainees.
  3. Presentation of subject matter as problems: Many a time the trainees are experienced employees. To make them involved, the content can be presented as a problem. By solving the problem they enhance their knowledge and improve their skills.
  4. Providing effective learning experiences-mental experiences as well as physical action– Most of the time the trainees are adult learners. Presentation of theory should be planned as action oriented.
  5. Use combination of training techniques/ methods and activities- Training is to attain change in the behavior. Change is possible only when all the senses are involved. More than one technique based on the type of change required should be selected for effectiveness.
  6. Timeliness and convenience of learners/participants. Training duration, time, season, type etc. are to be decided keeping in view the nature of participants. The attendance of participants just before festivals, important organizational events, agricultural operations and peak seasons like winter or summer is usually found short.
  7. Realistic: The trainees should feel the learning experience practically possible back at home situation.
  8. Flexibility: The content as well the session duration should always be flexible. The trainer should always be ready to react positively when there are queries from the trainees.
  9. Appropriate recognition for the achieving learners: Recognition is motivation. Individuals who are excellent in their performance, if recognized and awarded either verbally or materially during training and back at home situation, will excel in their career too.
