Cutting carpets and pads

  • Decide whether you want to choose wall to wall carpet.
  • If so, select carpet from a roll to and cut in to quor requirement
  • Decide whether you want to lay the carpet loose or install permanently.
  • Loose-laid carpet should fit within a foot or less of the rooms size so that it can be turned periodically to distribute wear and tear evenly
  • For permanent installation plan on paper for layout design in order to locate or plan joining of seams (Ref Fig-16.1)
  • Care to be taken while cutting the carpet cut loop-pile carpet from the front i.e. face side up using a row cutter or a utility knife.
  • Cut other carpet from the back. Measure the length on face side and mark the cutting point’s line on back of the carpet with a chalk. Then by using utility knife cut the carpet.
  • When cutting a carpet to shape the intricate outline that must be followed around the cabinets and fixtures. If there is already a carpet in the room, place the new carpet upside down on a flat surface of the old carpet and draw the outline and cut along the marked line.

Note: if any improvement in the shape is required make a note on the new carpet before cutting only.

  • If you are planning to include a pad under the new carpet, cut the pad to shape by placing it in position. Keep the longest straight wall, and then cut away the excess down to about 3 or 4 inches oversize around the remaining sides. Place the pad in place along the edge and press it to the corner & cut. After cutting place the pad upside down over the back of the carpet. Sometime old carpeting makes great padding.
  • To cut seams for any carpet first align the pieces with their edges parallel & the pile of both pieces running in the same direction & overlap the edge at least 3 inches
