Lesson 5 : Basic Hand Stitches

Back stitch

Back Stitch resembles machine stitch on the right side but overlaps on the wrong side. It can be substituted for machine stitching. It is useful for mending ripped out seams or any small area where secure stitching is needed and one does not wish to set the sewing machine. They can also be used for invisible firm stitches on right side, as in appliqués. The back stitch is useful for fastenings and for firm hand work.
