Lesson 11 : Fasteners and Hems

Hems

A hem is an edge finish given to a garment. Though it is the final step in garment construction, due consideration is to be given while finishing it. The purpose of a hem is to finish off the raw edge of the garment and help the garment hang better. A hem on the fabric edge can either be made in a single fold (suitable for bulky fabrics) or on a double fold. They can be narrow or wide, stitched with hand or on a machine or given a decorative touch by using laces, ribbons etc.
