HUMANE METHOD

Stunning by means of instrument, which render an animal unconscious

  • These are known as humane killers and there are two kinds
    • those which discharge a free bullet and
    • those which effect their purpose by means of a Captive bolt arrangement.
  • In the latter, the animal is stunned by a bolt, which is shot into the skull by the discharge of a cartridge and automatically withdrawn therefrom by means of recoil.

Prerequisites of stunning

The choice of a particular method of stunning depends on many different factors –

  • class of animal intended,
  • line speed,
  • humane aspects,
  • capital and maintenance costs,
  • efficiency of equipment,
  • ease of operation,
  • safety of personnel,
  • effects on carcass and brain,
  • along with religious and legal requirements.
