VESICULAR EXANTHEMA

Definition

  • Acute febrile, non fatal viral disease of pigs caused by calci virus.

Aetiology

  • Calci virus

Incidence

  • The disease was reported in 1935 fromm caliofornia, USA. Except for isolated outbreaks in Hawaii and Iceland

Transmission

  • Infection is by ingestion

Pathogenesis

  • Pathogeneses similar to FMD
  • There is viremia lasting for 72 -84 hrs. The virus then localizes in the buccal mucosa and skin above the hooves

Lesions

  • Vesicles in snout, nose, tongue, lips, gums, interdigital space, coronary band, teat, and udder.
  • Abortion and drying of lactating sows

Diagnosis

  • Complement Fixation Test, Virus neutralization test, Agar Gel Precipitation Test
