Lumpy skin disease
Definition

It is a highly infections disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by a Capri pox virus charactersied by the appearance of nodules on all parts of skin
Incidence
- First reported in Zambia in 1929 and restricted to Africa
Etiology
- Virus related to viruses of sheep and goat pox
Transmission
- Spreads by insect vectors mainly flies
Clinical signs
- Generalized cutaneous eruptions of round, firm nodules
- Nodules seen in mucous membrane of oral, nasal and genital tract
- Enlargement of superficial lymphnodes
- Mortality rate 10%
Microscopical lesions
- Inflammatory reaction in dermis
- Nodule is oedematous, perivascular collections of lymphocytes, macrophages, plasma cells, neutrophils and proliferating fibroblasts
- Acanthosis , parakeratosis, vesicle formation
- Eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in keratinocytes, fibroblasts and macrophages
Diagnosis
- Based on finding of eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in skin lesions and in tissue cultures
- Election microscopy
- Fluorescent antibody
- Serum neutralization test
