6.2.2. Asian Fisheries

Most of global aquaculture production comes from Asian countries. Asia accounted for nearly 46.01 million tonnes of aquaculture production which is more than 80 per cent of world aquaculture fish production. Asia pacific region accounted for 98 per cent of global carp production. (FAO 2009). In South Asia, major fish production comes from inland waters and freshwater aquaculture registers higher growth rate. Carps and other cyprinids are the dominant freshwater aquaculture species accounting for 19.3 per cent of global freshwater aquaculture production in 2006. Freshwater carps such as bighead carp, grass carp, silver carp, common carp, rohu, catla and mrigal are the widely cultured species in South Asia, accounting for more than 80 per cent of the total freshwater aquaculture production (Siriwardena, 2007).
