Lesson 9 : Proteins – Classification, Functions, Structure - Amino Acids

Introduction

Proteins are an important class of biological macromolecules present in all biological organisms, made up of such elements as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulphur. All proteins are polymers of amino acids

The composition of proteins in various parts of the body differs, eg. muscle contains about 1/3 protein, bone about 1/5 part and skin consists of 1/10 portion. The rest of the proteins are present in other body tissues and fluids. Even blood contains loads of proteins. In fact the hemoglobin molecule contains proteins. Our body requires proteins for the purpose of maintenance and healthy growth. The need for consuming proteins is especially more for infants, young children, pregnant women and recovering patients. There is a constant breakdown of proteins in the body and this explains the reason why we need to consume proteins on a regular daily basis. It is prime of importance to ensure the daily-recommended protein intake, is maintained, so as to improve health and fitness.

Every cell in the human body contains protein. It is a major part of the skin, muscles, organs, and glands. Protein is also found in all body fluids, except bile and urine.
