Endoscopy

An endoscope is flexible tube with a light and minor arrangement that can be inserted through the mouth and esophagus into the stomach. As the endoscope is manipulated by the surgeon, different parts of the stomach can be viewed by the images reflected back.

Upper GI Endoscopy – is a procedure which uses a lighted, flexible endoscope to see inside the upper part of gastrointestinal tract i.e.

  • Esophagus
  • Stomach
  • Duodenum
  • First part of small intestine
  • Removing – stuck objects i.e. food.
  • Treatment of bleeding ulcers.
  • Biopsy of tissue in upper GIT.

Preparation for upper GI Endoscopy

  • Upper GIT must be empty i.e. no eating and drinking is allowed for 4-8 hrs before endoscopy.
  • Smoking and chewing are also prohibited during endoscopy.
  • Medication and vitamins restricted before upper GI endoscopy.
  • Anti inflammatory drugs like aspirin.
  • Blood thinners
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Anti depressants
  • Medication for curing diabetes
  • Dietary supplements

Driving is prohibited for 12-24 hrs after upper GI endoscopy.
