Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme

A novel scheme of Integrated Child Development Services was launched in 1975-76 by the department of social welfare. It envisages an integrated package of services for children under 6 years and women during pregnancy and lactation. The services under the project include:
  1. Supplementary feeding
  2. Preschool education
  3. Immunization
  4. Health and Nutrition education
  5. Health checkup and referral services.
The concept of providing a package of services is based primarily on the premise that impact will be appreciable by converging all the needed inputs in the area of operation. The composite package of services is delivered to the community through specially trained anganwadi workers.
