Outdoor Advertising

Outdoor advertising reaches the people when they are in movement or in transit. It has been carried out from ages. The message is placed in strategic places exposed to moving audience. It has the best effects of advertising. The different types of outdoor advertising are –

  1. Advertising boards
    It is a card board, metal board, a wooden board, etc depicting the advertisement message with pictures. Its success depends on the advertisement designing and the site of display. They are fixed at places where people frequently assemble. They are more attractive than posters.
  2. Mural advertising / posters
    This is a common form of advertising. The posters are made in attractive colors in brief and printed. A poster is a sheet of paper or a card, where the matter is depicted. They are pasted on walls or boards. They are generally pasted at bus stops, railway station, market place, parks, libraries and crowded areas. The cost is less and it is flexible. But it has a very short life.
  3. Vehicular advertising
    These advertisements are depicted on the buses, trains, two wheelers, vans, etc. The vehicle passes through many places, and therefore, many people see and read it. Many companies own their own vehicles, with completely painted advertisement on it which moves from one place to another. For E.g. Warehouses, Pizza Corners etc.
  4. Travelling Display / transit Advertising
    These are advertisements on posters which are small in size and placed inside buses, autos, trains, vans, tramcars, etc. the travelling people, in these vehicles, repeatedly notice it and keep it in memory. It is very cheap means and reaches many people.
  5. Sky Advertising
    Sky writings have become very popular now – a – days. Big balloons or big kites with message written on them or attached to them are allowed to float in the open air. It is also displayed by the pilot, through airplane. The inscription or writing will speak about the product. It can be seen from a long distance.
  6. Electric Display
    Electric display is created and made by electrical engineers. It is attractive because of the color combinations. Some electrical display keeps changing. They use running bulbs strap which looks like, the advertisement is moving. Such arrangements are common in big cities. It is more bright and attractive during night times or in dark background. But it is costly.
  7. Sandwich – Men
    Sandwich – men are hired by the advertisers. They move or walk down through busy roads and streets. They dress in a peculiar way with fancy clothes, or they carry posters of the advertisers. Some utter slogans or they create certain type of musical sounds. Some sandwich- men wear T – shirt or trousers which are printed with advertisement. This sort of advertisement has short life, but it is effective and can attract attention.
  8. Leaf lets / handbills
    They are distributed among the people through hired men. The hand bill distributors distribute copies of the handbill to all who pass nearby. Only interested people go through the leaflets. Such advertisements are common and cheap. It is suitable for small business concerns.

Advantages

The advantages of outdoor advertising are

  1. It is best for local advertising.
  2. It speaks to everyone and it has the widest appeal.
  3. It is flexible and less costly.
  4. It indirectly beautifies the place.
  5. It engages few seconds of people’s time and need no effort.
  6. It attracts the viewers, because of its color and style.
  7. It can be easily accommodated.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of outdoor advertising are

  1. It can be used only as a supplementary type of advertising.
  2. Some outdoor advertising like posters, leaflets, and transit advertisements uglifies the place.
  3. It reduces its value because of brevity.
