Lesson 3 : General Principles of Toxicology

Exposure phase

For absorption, a toxic substance must be present in a molecular form that can be dispensed and be relatively lipophilic to penetrate biological membranes. The degree of ionization of the substance and the pH at the site of absorption are critical factors that affect the bioavailability and absorption of a toxic substance. Bioavailability is a measure of the degree to which a substance becomes available to the body after ingestion and is therefore available to the tissues. Many interactions between the toxic substance and various components in food influence the absorption of compounds. Therefore, various factors contribute to the exposure profile of a toxic substances ability to be available to the organism.
