Lesson 13 : Pregnancy in Older Women

Introduction

  • First time pregnancy has become common in women above 35 years, due to changing social environment, as many women pursue their education and careers and delay childbearing. As a result, the number of first births to women 35 and older has increased dramatically. Most complications that accompany aging such as diabetes and hypertension also cause problems in such women.
  • Maternal mortality rates are higher in older women.
  • Birth defects, preterm births, growth retardation and death among infants born to older mothers are common.
