Lesson 12 : Pregnancy in Adolescents

Introduction

Even among pregnant women, there are groups who need special attention.

  • Women with Hyperemesis gravidarum or severe vomitings.
    • Usually morning sickness is common in early pregnancy, but it subsides after first trimester. In previously well nourished women it does not require any intervention.
  • Oral supplementation is first tried in severe cases.
  • Enteral feeding is the next option
  • Small quantities of infusion- 30ml/hour – are given for 24 hours and then gradually oral intake should be initiated.
  • Women with low pre pregnancy weight or poor weight gain- who do not take adequate oral feed or even enteral feed areconsidered for parenteral nutrition.
