Lesson 17: Nutritional Care for Infants

Water

The younger the infant, the greater the percentage of water in his body. The water in an infants body is easily lost as it is mostly located in the extra cellular space. The water content of breast milk generally is sufficient to meet the infants requirements and no supplementation is required till solids are introduced. Once solids are introduced, the renal solute load is increased and it is necessary to give water to the infant to prevent stress on the kidneys. Fruits and vegetables place less pressure on the kidneys as compared to meat or eggs.
