Lesson 34 : Nutrition for Defense Personnel

High Altitude

Weight loss due to loss of appetite is common in military personnel working at high altitudes. According to the USARIEM, calorie requirements at high-altitude operations increase by 10 percent. The combination of altitude, cold climates and vigorous work may increase daily calorie needs to 5,000 or more. Carbohydrate and fluid needs also increase in high altitudes. The USARIEM says a high-altitude diet should be 60 to 70 percent carbohydrates, and soldiers should drink at least 5 quarts of fluid per day. Snacking between meals can help meet increased calorie needs. Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided because they can increase fluid loss.
