  • Energy needs decline with age – 5% decline is estimate per decade.
  • Reduction of physical activity is one reason for this.
  • BMR also decreases as the lean body mass diminishes.
  • Physical activity not only increases energy expenditure but along with good nutrition, enhances bone density and supports body functions.
  • Food intake often does not decline with decreasing energy requirement and often lead to obesity.
