Lesson 33 : Nutrition of Industrial Workers

Nutritional Requirements for Different Activities

Calories

Muscular work needs energy. The energy required for different activities is different. The energy needs of industrial workers will vary depending on the type of work he is doing. Energy requirements of workers in cold climates will be 15-20% greater and for those working in warm climates about 10% less than recommended allowances.

Requirement (per hour)

Sitting at rest

30 calories

Standing at rest

40 calories

Sweeping the floor

100 calories

Walking about

200 calories

Running

500 calories

Boxing

800 calories

Proteins
If the energy requirements are adequately met, muscular work does not affect the protein requirements of workers. However it is necessary to provide about 20% extra protein to industrial workers to maintain nitrogen equilibrium. Moreover extra protein is required to meet the wear and tear and provide the extra protein required in cold weather.

Vitamin A
Those workers exposed to bright sunlight during working hours may require more of this vitamin.

Thiamine
The requirement of thiamine depends on the calorie intake.

Riboflavin
Helps in the utilization of the energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
