Lesson 15: Designing Commercial Space – Sports & Recreation

Introduction

Sports & Recreation facilities may include fitness center, swimming pool club house with large sports hall, squash courts, cafeteria, licensed bar, aerobics studios, outdoor grass and/or artificial pitches for football (soccer), hockey etc., a solarium, sauna and/or steam room. Newer health clubs generally include health-shops, snack bars, restaurants, child-care facilities, member lounges and cafes. It is not unusual for a sauna, steam shower, or wellness areas to be present. A fairly new trend is the advent of eco friendly health clubs which incorporate principles of "green living" in its fitness regimen.

Sports playing courts or other spaces fit into various sizes of sports or community halls. Required minimum space allowed for each takes into account not only actual playing area but: necessary run-out of safety margins, team bench and officials space round playing space which amount to overall areas used for assessment; critical heights which in some instances degrade standard for which otherwise floor space adequate; need for some additional free circulation space inside hall entrance.
