Lesson 15:Designing Commercial Space – Sports & Recreation

Sports Facilities

Gymnasiums:
Quiet areas and relaxation spaces help people to socialize and contribute to the wellness and comfort of all users: Gymnasium are designed to offer its clients, extensive experience in the following fields:

  • Architectural design;
  • New multi-sensory and aesthetic developments applied to materials;
  • Efficient subdivision of spaces;
  • Interior layout development in plan view;

The good design concept originates from the firm belief that materials, lights, colors and aromas can be used to trigger positive emotions and sensations.

Swimming Pools
Design needs:
Swimming pools for meant for leisure and physical fitness. Some of the main features of pools specifically created for indoor leisure and recreational swimming are areas of shallow water with beach edges, infant pools, wave machines, water chutes, flumes and splash pools. These, together with the use of good quality materials, artificial sun bathing, planting, lagoon, islands, seating and refreshment areas for swimmers and spectators give a much greater range of experiences for the bather rather than the serious swimmer.

Diving
Casual users of swimming pool facilities will use the 1m and 3m spring boards but not the high fixed boards. In order to fully utilize the diving pool, which is either in a separate pool or physically separated zone of a main pool, other leisure uses such as sub-aqua diving, water polo training, lane swimming or synchronized swimming should be considered. Over the past few years the majority of pool users have been from the adult population and this has meant that the expectation is for much higher standard of changing and related areas. There is clear trend towards mixed-sex changing areas. For the majority of public pools, perhaps the ideal arrangement would be to have a main mixed-sex changing area supplemented by two group changing areas adjacent.

Dimensions:
Indoor swimming pool should be 12.5x25m
Training pool 6x12.5m
Free shape general purpose pool 20x25m
Diving pool with 10 m stage 20x20m
If the swimming pool and diving pool are in the same area, they must be 5m apart from each other.

Lighting
In competitive swimming it is important that officials and spectators are able to accurately determine when swimmers touch the pool wall, and that turns and strokes are correctly executed. In recreational pools, safety attendants must be able to see clearly, in any part of the pool, swimmers or other users who may be in distress. Direct lighting systems are suitable for the lighting of indoor pools.

Changing Room
Accessible from hall, separated by sex; not inside poor area common changing room as extra space.

Pre-Cleanse
Barefoot passage past wc to showers; 1sho/8clo spaces; sho spaces required 1.35-1.25m/sq; toilets: minimum 2 wc; male 1/15-20 female 1/7-10; urinals1/15-20males

Indoor Sports :

Tennis:

t

The court
The court is a rectangle, 23.77m long and for singles matches, 8.23m wide. For doubles matches, the court is 10.97m wide.

Lighting
The fundamental requirement of a tennis lighting installation is the control of the brightness of the ball and the background against which it is viewed. The ball must be visible regardless of its location and speed.

b

Weightlifting
The platform is a 4m square. If the floor surrounding the platform is the same or similar colour, the top edge of the platform must have a different coloured line of at least 150mm. The platform is made of wood, plastic or any solid material and can be covered with a non-slippery material.
A clear 1m area surrounding the platform is compulsory. This area must be flat and free from any obstacle including discs. The height of the platform is between 50mm and 150mm. If the platform is above ground level, a restraining bar at least the width of the platform is suitably and safely fixed to the stage, at least 1m in front of the platform.

v

Karate
The competition area must be flat and devoid of hazard. The competition area is a matted 8m square, with an additional 2m on all sides as a safety area.

r

Badminton:
Is an indoor racquet game played by one or two players opposing an equivalent number across a net.

Court dimensions
The court is a rectangle and can be used for both singles and doubles. The court size for singles is 13.4m x 5.18m (playing area = 69.41m² including boundary lines) and 13.4m x 6.1m (playing area = 81.74m² including boundary lines). The lines are 40mm wide and coloured white or yellow. It is desirable to have a wooden sprung floor together with approved non-slip court mats.

Background and lighting
To avoid difficulty in sighting the shuttle, the background behind the ends of the court is not to be colored white.
The minimum recommended lighting level is 1000 lux to provide even light over the court area. Lighting is not to be directly over or behind the playing area but positioned along the sides of the court

k

Table Tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping pong, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight, hollow ball back and forth with rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, players must allow a ball played toward them only one bounce on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. The table is 2.74 m (9 ft) long, 1.525 m (5 ft) wide, and 76 cm (30 inch) high with a Masonite (a type of hardboard) or similarly manufactured timber, layered with a smooth, low-friction coating. The table or playing surface is divided into two halves by a 15.25 cm (6 inch) high net. The table surface is often in a green, blue or red color. The game is played on a 274 cm × 152.5 cm × 76 cm high (9 ft × 5 ft × 30 inches high) table.

v

Basketball court
In basketball, the basketball court is the playing surface, consisting of a rectangular floor with baskets at either end. In professional or organized basketball, especially when played indoors, it is usually made out of a hardwood, often maple, and highly polished. Other indoor surfaces include suspended plastic interlocking tiles. Outdoor surfaces used include plastic interlocking tiles (suspended athletic courts), asphalt, blacktop, or similar materials are used. Amateur players would typically use tarmac as the surface.

Dimensions
Court length 94 ft
Court width 50 ft
Rim height 10 ft
Restricted area distance from the basket 4 ft
Center circle diameter 12 ft
3-point line distance from the basket 23.75 ft 22 ft Sides
Key (shaded lane or restricted area) width line16 ft
