Lesson 19 : Roof And Roof Coverings

Introduction

Roof is a flat or sloped cover at the top of the building, which is constructed in the form of framework to give protection to their building against rain, heat, snow, winds etc. In other words it may be defined as an umbrella protecting the structure below. A roof basically consists of structural elements provided at the top of building for the support of roof coverings. The structural elements may be trusses, portals, beams, slabs, shells or domes. Roof and roof coverings receive rain and snow more directly and in much greater quantity than the walls. Therefore, it is essential to provide a positive barrier to the entry of rain, hence, vigorous weather proofing is most important. The roof structure, which supports the roof coverings must have adequate strength and stability. Apart from these, a roof must have thermal insulation, fire resistance and sound insulation.

As it is important to make safe foundations for a building, it is equally important to provide good roof above it. Good foundation protects the building against damage from below the ground and in a similar way good roof prevents deterioration of the building starting from the top.

The roof covering may be AC sheets, G.I sheets, tiles, slates or slabs.
