Lesson 25: Water conservation

Water scarcity issues

Clean water is becoming scarce globally. With deforestation, surface run-off increases and the subsoil water table drops. As wells are being dug deeper and deeper, depleting the underground stores of water. Perennial rivers are becoming seasonal due to deforestation and desertification. Overuse and misuse has led to a shortage of potable drinking water.

Water conservation methods

  1. Conserve water in multiple small percolation tanks and Jheels – an important feature of traditional forms of agriculture.
  2. Common talab or tank in each village
  3. Drip irrigation
  4. Small percolation tanks and rainwater harvesting
  5. Checking the leaks of taps and pipes regularly.
