Suggestions for effective watershed management

  • In water shed projects, emphasis should be on desilting of tanks, converting some minor irrigation tanks to percolation tanks, continuous contour trenching etc. to accelerate groundwater recharge.
  • Watersheds should aim to conserve soil, water and vegetation for improved livelihood.
  • The planning of watershed should be evolved with people’s participation and be demand driven.
  • Technological measures to improve rainfed agriculture should also be taken up.
  • All aspects of improving the tank such as strengthening the embankment, structural repairs, removal of encroachments could be undertaken.
  • Government and NGOs need to facilitate the process of cost sharing.
  • Post-project sustainability needs to be given due priority.
