Introduction

With the increase in the life span, the proportion of aged / elderly population has increased. With the passing of the three – generation households, more elderly persons are living by themselves and therefore require separate housing accommodation, thus leading to independent living. Ordinary design criteria do not always apply for housing the aged. The needs caused by physical deterioration is old age require special design treatment and facilities. In addition basic psychological and sociological principles should be observed. They need to continue is the same old neighborhoods and also activities. They would also like to participate is community functions. The objectives programs & physical facilities for the housing of the aged should encourage and support the continuance of earlier patterns of living, daily routines, social contacts and recreational activities. An important objective is to maintain independent living as long as possible.

Independent units are connected in some way to a larger home. This can be a small apartment in the back of a house, or a small building on the property. These arrangements provide a way to give support to an older family member or friend, while allowing the older person the privacy of separate living quarters.
