Lesson 14 : Designing Private Space For Family

Space For Sleeping

One can spends more than one- third of his life at rest in sleep here. A place to relax and recuperate after a long tiring day.
The Requisites for Sleeping are:

  • A bed or beds long enough and wide enough for one or two persons.
  • A bedside table or built - in storage unit or a ledge behind the bed; to hold the belongings that may accompany one to bed reading materials, medicines, clock and radio, tissues, water bottle and glass, cups and dishes, eyeglasses, a telephone and so on.
  • A light source next to or over the bed for reading and for emergencies. ~ Control of natural light by draperies or blinds.
  • Ventilation from windows or other air sources.
  • Quietness, achieved by locating bedrooms away from - or insulating them against - noisier parts of the house, and by using sound - absorbing materials.

Bedroom for Adults:

  1. A well - designed space for sleeping affords a quiet retreat at anytime of the day. It can be relaxing to curl up or stretch out on a bed during the afternoon. Often, bedrooms provide the best conditions in the home for concentrated reading, study or meditation.
  2. It must necessarily reflect its user's lifestyle, his practical needs, and aesthetic preferences and also his dreams. For these reasons, a bedroom ideally should be moderately sized, multipurpose, segregated space. It should feel peaceful and at ease. As per standards if a family has 4 members it should have 2 bedrooms and if it has 6 members it should have not less than 3 bed rooms.
  3. Master bed rooms should be spacious enough to accommodate a double bed or twin beds with adequate circulation space and if possible it should have its own bath- room . An oblong room is more convenient particularly as a bedroom, than a square one, and that no room should be less than 100sqft in floor area. Minimum window area required by the municipal bye-laws, is one-tenth of the floor area.
  4. Bed rooms should be placed on the side of the direction of the prevailing wind and if this happens to be west, the wall on that side should be protected from being heated by the sun's afternoon rays by the provision of a deep verandah on that side. The ideal conditions are that the sun should shine in the bedrooms for some part of the day, preferably in the morning, and free breeze should ventilate it by night.
  5. A small bath room combined with a dressing room attached to bed room is more or less a modern necessity in the houses of the rich or well-to-do.
  6. Some storage space is absolutely essential in bed rooms. Portable storage shelf or almirah not only occupy some floor space, and the cubic contents of the room, but it has got a top surface which collects dust. Besides it is difficult to keep the cramped space below the wardrobe clean.
  7. A cupboard built into wall is free from all these disadvantages besides being cheaper. One or two such built - in cupboards in the places where they would not come in the way of beds are very convenient. A chest of drawers also could be provided built into the wall below such cupboards.
    • A wardrobe is a piece of furniture that serves as a clothing storage area.
    • A reach-in closet is one where doors conceal the pole and shelf space is accessed only when the doors are open.
    • A walk-in closet is a room that one walks into to access two, three or four walls of space organized with hanging poles and storage shelving. Typically all are exposed, although some pole areas and shelving may be placed behind more elegant doors.
    • While planning bed rooms first determine the position of the bed in respect to the windows, so that the bed would be in the path of the cross air currents. At the most another position for bed may be thought for winter, away from direct breeze.
  8. Door should be located in such a way that when open, the bed would be screened rather than exposed.
  9. A Single - leafed door is thus more suitable in bed rooms.
  10. Further, there should be adequate space for the bedroom furniture such as a chair, dresser, small table etc.

Bed-room for Children:

  • Every child in the house needs a place to sleep and to store their belongings. Depending upon their ages and personalities, they will also need space where they can be alone. Children of different sexes above ten should preferably have different rooms.
  • When creating a bedroom for children, one must remember to provide function, create a spacious arrangement, and find a style that works for all personalities. For a child, the bedroom represents a space of their own in a world of constant supervision and limited expression.
  • Effective organization will help children know where the important "stuff" is as well as teach self sufficiency, and develop or reinforce the ability to focus on assigned tasks.
  • User-friendliness and safety are first on the list of children's bedroom. Good storage requires constant attention. The secret to a well functioning living space is to fortify a young child's bedroom with an age appropriate storage system.
  • Children have a hard time staying neat and on top of their belongings if there is just too much. Hence appropriate storage facilities should be provided.
  • A loft bed is an excellent piece of furniture as it is essentially a self-contained mini room within the room. Another style of furniture that you can buy with multiple functions is platform beds with drawers underneath. Implementing these simple organizational ideas for a child's bedroom will save any parent the time and frustration of the constant clean up.

Bedroom for guests:

  • A formal guest bedroom will give house guests privacy during their visit and limit the number of personal jsacrifices made by household members.
  • A spare room in a house is welcome at all times. Not only does it accommodate an occasional guest, but it can be used for a number of other purposes as well. For instance, when there is no guest it can be used for library or hobby shop or for any other purpose which require quiet atmosphere conductive to the concentration of mind. This room can house any gym equipment and therefore be used as a exercise room while there are no guests.
  • Ideal place for guest room, if budget permits is a separate detached guest house, with a small verandah & bath room or at least a toilet room attached. If it is not possible, a room inside the house should be allocated.
  • Special requirements of this room, besides being well lighted & ventilated are that it should be, as far as, possible independent of other rooms except the drawing room (into which it may open) and the front verandah, and that it should have an independent access from it to the general bathroom unless a special toilet room is attached to the guest room.
  • Further, it should be sufficiently spacious to hold a bed, a writing desk and chair, and a sofa or at least a chesterfield chair.
