Lesson 13 : Wall Elements – Fireplaces

Location

When fire places were used for heating, mainly every room had one. Today most houses have but one in their living, dining or family room. Several factors should be kept in mind.

  • Fire places are usually large more or less dominant elements.
  • The demand considerable maintenance when a fire is burning and therefore should be accessible.
  • They are natural centres for furniture arrangements and usually attract as many persons as space around them permits.
  • They are frequently on outside walls where chimney can be an exterior design factor.
  • The typical location is a centre of a long wall. This leads towards status symmetry with emphasis in the middle of a long wall, but it tends to shorten the room visually.
  • It allows maximum visibility for large groups and suggests a symmetrical furniture arrangement.
  • A fire place may also be the end of a spur wall that acts as a room divider.
  • It can be free standing or in a room wall
