Why in Garment Industry?

Apparel Industry Management 3(3+0)

Lesson 36 : SA-8000 : A Vital Tool for Garment Industry

Why in Garment Industry?

It has been estimated that more than 100 million children worldwide are employed as full time labour. The vast majority is in Asia, Africa, South America and most of them are engaged in apparel, toy making & hand made carpet industry. Garment manufacturing consists of several small activities, which need little or no skills. Child labours are engaged in such activities. Entrepreneurs tend to make huge profits by paying minimum wages to the child labour & spending least amount in developing and maintaining working environment. The workers are even deprived of basic minimum facilities like drinking water, toilet, adequate lighting required for carrying out works. Moreover, most of the entrepreneurs follow the practice of charging fines for not fulfilling the goal. They least care for the society they operate and live in.

Since the last couple of years, there has been increasing demand from the overseas buyers & dealers for the quality garments, which are produced, in humane working condition without exploiting the workers & obeying certain ethical work practices. Anything made in inhumane conditions will be no more accepted by the overseas buyers.

Thus SA-8000 is increasingly becoming an essential pre-requisite in market access and customer satisfaction. Accordingly, well-to-do business icons throughout the world have already initiated actions for implementing SA-8000.
