Since its inception in the year 1997, till 31st. December 2006 more than 1300 facilities (covering 62700) employees are certified. Initially the response was slow, only 200 companies till 2002 was certified, however it started gaining popularity rapidly from 2004 and since then around 1000 companies are certified . It is projected that by the end of 2007 more than 1600 companies will be SA 8000 certified.

In today's scenario competitiveness cannot be based on solely on cost or quality. Earlier customer insisted on eco-friendly quality product but now with rising public concern over inhumane working condition access to the international market requires the companies to maintain decent working condition and to respect human rights at the workplaces. National & international labour laws require it.

Initially it may appear as a difficult and costly affair, but it gives benefits to the business houses both manufacturers & retailers in terms of enhanced brand and reputation and increased attractiveness to global buyers, and lower employee turnover. In order to exploit full benefits of abolition of quota system the apparel manufacturers in our country should adopt proactive measures in implementing SA 8000.This will not only ensure the prosperity and goodwill for the company but also benefit the society as a whole.
