SYLLABUS - THEORY

Definition of statistics, scope of fisheries statistics.

Basic concepts of population and sample, random sampling.

Collection of data; census enumeration and sample surveys, their advantages and disadvantages, preparation of schedules and questionnaires;

Classification of data, frequency and cumulative frequency table.

Diagrammatic and graphical representation of data - bar diagrams, pie-diagram, histogram, frequency polygon, frequency curve and Ogive;

Important measures of central tendency - arithmetic mean, media ;and mode, relative merits and demerits of these measures.

Important measures of dispersion -range, mean deviation, variance and standard deviation, relative merits and demerits of these measures; relative measures of dispersion - coefficient of variation;

Measures of skewness and kurtosis.
