Abdominal cavity-left side

ABDOMINAL CAVITY (LEFT SIDE)

  • Study the Greater omentum: It consist of a superficial layer arising from the left face of the rumen and a deep layer arising from, the right face of the rumen. Both the layers curve ventrally around the intestinal mass, pass to the right side and the superficial layer is attached to the greater curvature of abomasum and the second part of duodenum. The deep layer ends by blending with mesoduodenum and is also attached to the first bend of the colon and visceral surface of liver. The two layers are continuous along the posterior transverse groove of the rumen. The epiploic foramen is the communication between the greater peritoneal sac (peritoneum lining the abdominal cavity and covering the viscera) and the lesser peritoneal sac (an invagination of the greater sac). This foramen is located on the visceral surface of the liver, bounded above by the caudate lobe of the liver and below by the pancreas.
  • Note the lesser omentum extending from the visceral surface of the liver to the greater curvature of omasum and pyloric part of abomasum and first part of duodenum.

  • Now study the exterior of rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum, the divisions of small and large intestines (by referring to the lecture notes).
