DIFFERENT METHODS OF RITUAL SLAUGHTER

  • Ritual slaughter as opposed to humane slaughter is slaughtering of animals while they are conscious.
  • Ritual slaughter as the name suggests is bas on religious tenets of a particular religion.

The most commonly adopted ritual methods of slaughtered globally are

  • Kosher method is as per the Judaism followed by Jews.
  • Halal method is as per Islam followed by Muslims.
  • There are a few more traditional methods adopted which are less common and adopted in confined areas, for instance,
  •  The Evernazione method followed in Spain, parts of Italy, Mexico and some South American countries. It is also called as neck – stab method.
  • Cattle are slaughtered by the neck-stab or evernazione method, in which a short double edged knife (puntilla) is plunged into the occipito-atlantal space at the nape of the neck, severing the medulla oblongata in this method.
  • The Jatkha method of slaughter as per Sikhism is followed by Sikhs.
  • This method is followed in India albeit in few pockets only.
  • Sheep and goats are decapitated by one stroke with a sword.
  • In parts of northern India skilled operators can decapitate buffaloes by a single stroke with a special sword.
  • In the Arctic, reindeer are killed by a curved single-edged knife, which, after being inserted into the occipito-atlantal space, is directed forwards to destroy the brain.
  • In India Halal method is practiced extensively.
