COMMON TERMS

  • An aggregation is a collectivity of persons who are held together in physical sense other than inter communication.
  • A category is a number of persons who can be thought of as a unit, whether or not they are communicating or interacting with one another. All groups are categories but not all categories are groups.
  • A Crowd is a temporary collection of people reacting to stimuli. A crowd consists of
    • a number of people with focused attention.
    • physical presence at a particular place.
    • an affinity between the members creating cohesiveness.
    • impersonality - anonymous
    • heterogeneity & impermanency of composition.
    • emotional build up that can be transmitted from one member to another
  • Integration or cohesiveness
    • Groups are to satisfy human needs both Physiological as well as Psychological.
    • Group stability and endurance rests on cohesiveness or integration. Group
    • Cohesiveness depends upon
        1. Homogeneity of the group
        2. Size of group
        3. Physical mobility
        4. Effectiveness of communication
