4.2. Chief characters used in the identification of shrimps
The most important features of taxonomic value are carapace and its spines, the rostrum and its dorsal and ventral teeth, the ridges or carinae, the grooves, abdominal carination, telson, appendages and their segments, petasma and appendix masulina in the male, the thelycum in female.
The commercial shrimps and prawns belong mostly to the families, Penaeidae, Pandalidae, Hippolytidae, Sergestidae and Palaemonidae.
