9.3. Genus Scylla
  • Anteroexternal angle of basal antennal segment not appreciably produced.
  • Flagellum standing in orbital hiatus.
  • Anterolateral carapace cut into 9 teeth of equal size.
  • Propodus of chelipeds inflated.
Scylla serrata - Giant mud crab
  • Carapace smooth, with strong transverse ridges;
  • H-shaped gastric groove deep;
  • relatively broad frontal lobes, all more or less in line with each other;
  • broad anterolateral teeth, projecting obliquely outwards.
  • Well-developed spines present on outer surface of chelipedal carpus and anterior and posterior dorsal parts of palm.

Scylla tranquebarica - Purple mud crab

  • Maximum carapace width 20 cm (males), weight upto 2kg.
  • Carapace green to almost black, palm purple.
  • Frontal to be pointed more and arranged in same row.
  • Two stout spines on outer angle of carpus of cheliped.
