A variety of colour reactions occur that are specific for particular functional groups in amino acids. The following are the important reactions which are useful in both qualitative and quantitative identification of amino acids

  1. Reaction with Ninhydrin
  2. Reaction with Sanger’s reagent
  3. Reaction of amino acids with formaldehyde
