6.2.1 Arithmetic Mean

Arithmetic mean of a set of observations is defined as their total divided by the number of observations, e.g. the arithmetic mean x¯ of n observation x₁, x­ . . . . xn is given by

In case of frequency distribution x_i/f_i, i= 1, 2, ….. n where f_i is the frequency of the variable x_i,

In case of grouped or continuous frequency distribution, x_i is taken to be the mid-point of the class-interval.
